This sheds a new light (for me) on the incident when Niki Proshen, was box-slapped recently, across the head, in a live stream by a total stranger, who accosted him verbally: "speak Russian", as he was streaming in English. Drab overtones, but a fascinating cultural history lesson🌝!

Udmurt belongs to the Finno-Ugric language group, like my mother tongue Finnish. In the last decade, Russia made it more difficult to organise congresses of Finno-Ugric peoples, for example by reducing the number of participants in each delegation from twenty to five. That´s russification in action!

As a Welsh speaker here in Wales, we're very aware of this phenomenon. Only with independence can a unique language and defend, grow and flourish. That's the lesson for Wales and Welsh too. 'Big' languages, or rather, once imperial languages (English, Russian, French, Spanish etc) can flourish in many different states i.e. Russia could be devided into 10 different Russian states but the Russian language would still be ok, maybe even more attractive to people, but a language like Ukraine (which is a significant language but has suffered under Russification) and certainly Udmurt or Abkhaz or Mari need their own states - same in Western Europe for languages like Welsh, Baque, Breton or Catalan.

I have relatives from Moldova that were deported to Siberia after the war because one of the family members was a Romanian language teacher. They deported people and brought in Russian peasants that got displaced by the war. I don't know how many people they have killed, but the numbers are probably huge.

Yes Anna is PhD in Linguistics and an expert in this. I think derussification will become a field of study on it's own as it is so wide reaching and complex. And humanity needs to be smart about it to save what we can of the many cultures and languages crushed even today by Russia. This diversity and richness of cultures enriches all of humanity. And is what Putin and evil Russian regime wants to eliminate.
