As a tip for Italians, or any other English learners who natively speak a Romance language, there is a trick for knowing when or when not to pronounce the "h" in English words. If the word in English is a true cognate to a word in a Romance language, you most likely don't pronounce the "h". For example, hour is a true cognate to hora in Italian, hora in Spanish, heure in French, and hora in Latin. This also applies to words like honor, honesty, and vehicle. In all of these languages, you don't pronounce the "h". This carried through into English as well. Also, since words like hungry and hate are true cognates to Germanic languages, which originally pronounce the "h", the "h" is also pronounced in English. It all has to do with what language English borrowed the word from.

I am a student in Italy, I am not Italian, and I had as well many many cases we the "H" thingi, I study in English I have some Italian friends so I hear it very often. The most hilarious "H" moment was when, I was at a friend and we ordered pizza and while we were waiting she turns to me and she tells me " I (H)ate the girl at the pizza place" , It was my first year in Italy so i didnt know this was a thing they had problem with, so I freaked out, I started asking her what exactly she means and she was continuing using that phrase. HILARIOUS !

We used to not pronunce the "H" because since childhood we've learnt that everytime we see an "h" we don't have to pronounce it..so for us is silent. That's why for Italians is so difficult pronounce the "h" and we need to make an effort.

poor H, the most forgotten and ignored letter in Italy. much like Molise :(

people look for it only when they have to land a helicopter

H also means "nothing" in expressions like "it's not worth an H" or "I can't understand an H" (meaning "I'm clueless")

it's the only letter in the Italian alphabet whose name doesn't include the letter itself
(for example F is "effe", Z is "zeta" and H is... "acca")

In my opinion, all of these mistakes come from the fact that here in Italy, English is not taught well (most of the time) and even when it is, students usually don’t care about studying and learning it (and I’m speaking by experience -not me but most of my classmates were like that-). So, when they actually need to speak English, they think in Italian and then they just translate it literally, word by word, hence the horrible mistakes they make. I know I’m not that great myself, but I try as hard as I can to improve my skills by listening to music and learn the lyrics of the songs without reading it, by watching shows in the original language, possibly with no subtitles at all and by reading out loud as many English books as I can. I’ve been doing this for 9 years now and I can tell that both my listening skills and my speaking skills have improved a lot. I’ll admit that I still find writing a little bit difficult because I think too much about the structure of the sentence and it usually turns out to be the worst for me. Still, I’m not giving up and even though I don’t go to school anymore, I do my best to keep on working on it.
Anyway, I gotta say that I make the mentioned mistakes as well sometimes and each time I get really embarassed because I know I can do better than that. Enough being said, you are great and I love your reasoning 😘 ♥️

when and will CAN be used in the same sentence, for example, "I will do my homework when I get home."

So glad I've found your channel! I'm Italian and I'm studying mediazione linguistica at Uni. I've studied English for many years and I also practise it at home with my mom sometimes (because she's filipino so she can speak English quite fluently) but the main way I like to test my pronunciation and my fluency is to watch YT videos. This kind of video is SO helpful!

GRAZIE!
