@calsngj "Between 1995 and 2003, abortion rates dropped more in developed than in developing countries. And although it may be difficult for some to accept, rates fell most sharply in countries where abortion is legally available on broad grounds and widely available in practice. It is in these same places, though, where demand for and use of contraception has been on the rise." Susan A. Cohen

How sad is that this is only coming out and being paid attention to NOW? Let's hope that enough people open their eyes before next week and vote to fix this before it kicks in...

@Sukov I didn't say it was causation, I was saying that laws forbidding abortion are ineffective. What is effective is education, and available reproductive and health services. It's possible to contain, restrict, and reduce abortion in this world, and it seems the more "liberal" nations have found out how to do it.

I love how this video portrays elective abortion as somehow something that should not be covered in universal healthcare services.

@Itseasyifyou ty for the article recomm. However most of the pts made were presented in a high school debate I participated in back in '81, so it's all old info to me. You see, I've already been "enlightened" for near 30 yrs now, and this "enlightenment" actually helped form my pov. Not only that, but this "enlightenment" has stood the test of time and has actually garnered wisdom as I've personally witnessed the effects of abortion.

Forcing me to pay for abortions via taxes still = no choice

@Sukov No, that's not the argument being made. What I'm saying is that there seems to be a tremendous amount of effort criminalize abortion in this country, and the fact is that these laws are ineffective. It's become a "single-issue" thing for many voters, but even with majorities in both houses of Congress, and in the White House, not a thing was done to criminalize abortion. Efforts were made to de-fund abortion.

Meanwhile, the culture war prevents us from reducing abortion together.

@samshotmail

We vote. On the 2nd we have our midterm election and the goal for many is to put as many in the house and senate as we can, that want to either repeal, refuse to fund, or change the bill to reflect what the people had been asking for. ;) That's why elections are so important in America. We make our feelings known through our elected officials.

@calsngj In Eastern Europe the rate fell from 90 to 44 between 1995 and 2003. The Eastern Bloc controlled by the soviets used Abortion as a birth control method, but this is changing now that medical practice is catching up to the rest of the western world.

@calsngj "An estimated 92% of women of childbearing age in Africa live in countries with restrictive abortion laws."

"The annual number of induced abortion in Africa rose between 1995 and 2003, from 5.0 million to 5.6 million...the annual abortion rate declined...from 33 to 29 abortions per 1000 women."

In developed countries excluding Eastern Europe, the abortion rate dropped from 20 to 19 in the same time. 3.8mil to 3.5mil

I'm actually very glad. I feel like I would HAPPILY pay taxes to go to funding abortions. Abortions are already too expensive and most women cant afford them in the first place.

@glocksout I agree abortions should be reduced. I don't know that abortion will ever be criminalized in the USA but ultimately that and the effectiveness of criminalization are separate questions from whether or not it should be criminalized.

I have not yet found a single argument for abortion restriction that wasn't logically fallacious.

@Vahtacen By that logic, if a teen killed a person he/she should be absolved from any responsibility simply because they lack common sense? Totally absurd. People of all ages must take responsibility for their actions and choices

Regardless of your views on the abortion issue, this video offers everybody a good look at exactly how political hot-air rhetoric and empty gestures can be readily superseded by technical details in the fine print of a bill at the end of the day.

It's like Glen Beck pointed out on his show yesterday... the "R"'s & the "D"'s have a meaningless talking points "script" ("Oh, yeah... where were we in the script? Oh, you' take this position & we'll take the other position this round")

Fact: Countries with the greatest access to abortion have the lowest rates of abortion. Countries with the strictest regulation on abortion have the highest rates of abortion.

@miket1m So in your view, the woman has the responsibility to protect life and should therefore be denied abortion, and the man should have the right to prevent an abortion but should not be held morally or legally accountable for his share in creating the unwanted pregnancy. That sounds really balanced and ethical.

@calsngj
"the abortion rate is 29 in Africa, where abortion is illegal in many circumstances in most countries, and it is 28 in Europe, where abortion is generally permitted on broad grounds. The lowest rates in the world are in Western and Northern Europe, where abortion is accessible with few restrictions." Sedgh G, Henshaw S, Singh S, Åhman E, Shah IH. @TyrannySue You're correct about males being 50% responsible. But they don't happen to share 50% of the choice when it comes to abortion or their childrens lives. They are required to pay child support, but can't stop a woman from aborting their child. Fair? I think not.

@harlicesurel Just for you I looked up the numbers again. Just a few of them (number is abortions per 1000 women).

Countries where abortion is legal: USA 22.9; Australia 22.2; Canada 15.5; Denmark 16.1; Finland 10; Germany 7.6; Netherlands 6.5.

Countries were abortion is illegal: Brazil 29.8; Chile 35.3; Colombia 26; Mexico 17.1.

@calsngj The decline in abortion incidence was greater in developed countries, where nearly all abortions are safe and legal (from 39 to 26 abortions per 1, 000 women aged 15-44), than in developing countries, where more than half are unsafe and illegal (from 34 to 29).
