Yes, the biggest wrestling event of all time by attendance really did happen in North Korea in 1995. It was called the Collision in Korea.

Here’s your 60 second wrestling crash course.

The year was 1995 and Japanese professional wrestling megastar turned politician Antonio Inoki had a crazy idea: A massive two-day pro wrestling spectacle and diplomatic event held in North Korea.

Inoki’s mentor was Rikidozan, the father of Japanese pro wrestling who was actually born and raised in what would later become North Korea. King Jong-ill had just taken over leadership of the country and the propaganda opportunities here were obvious.

Co-promoted by New Japan pro wrestling and WCW, it was a 15-match program that featured everyone from Shinya Hashimoto to the Steiner brothers, with the main event of day 2 being Inoki himself vs Ric Flair.

That second day was attended by between 165 to 190,000 people, depending on who you believe. A shortened card was broadcast as a pay per view in America by WCW.
