cybernetics is not a "study of machines" : Cybernetics is the transdisciplinary study of circular causal processes such as feedback and recursion, where the effects of a system's actions (its outputs) return as inputs to that system, influencing subsequent action. In other words is the study of how a system feedbacks it's output to his input to influence his next actions.
Remember that the original book was written in the '60s, no computer revolution in sight at the moment.
