What is a Prosumer Electrical Installation?

Amendment 2 to the 18th Edition of BS 7671 introduced a whole new element: Part 8 Functional Requirements. In that Part we find Chapter 82: Prosumer's Low Voltage Electrical Installations.

This has led many electricians and others to ask: Just what is a Prosumer?

In this question and answer video, shot on location at The Installer Show, we explain what a Prosumer is making reference to chapter 82 of the Wiring Regulations and many of the terms used in it.

You guys are great at keeping us lesser mortals informed and aware of the many options that should now be considered when thinking about our homes/heating/electricity and upgrades to what should now be termed "Prosumer" units that house all the fancy electronics to keep things safe and manage / tell us what the heck is going on with the Energy being consumed / generated.

Thanks for another interesting video. My local supply authority (AUSGRID) in Sydney, Australia is trialing another variation on the theme with community battery systems. A large battery installation is placed next to a local street transformer and the various properties with solar systems are connected to it.

Good explanation. There is also a trend now with people working at home, either permanently or occasionally, that you put solar in first, see how you can use it (we have 106kWh of batteries combined in our 2 EVs and about 12 for our hot water tank) and then think about home batteries. Still like the idea of being able to sell any excess to my neighbours mind!

As a Scot and living here with grey cloudy/raining skies almost 8/9 months of the year (and yes it even rained today!), I feel that Solar PV is really not going to be viable for me in the long term.
I will wait for my MMRNR (mini modular residential nuclear reactor) instead!
Jokes aside, great video and I really hope the Government is able to give out some interest free loans for Solar panels, as down south its definately going to help over the long term, even with the degradation of the panels.

It’s ok to it goes wrong.
Not that I intended getting a EV but surely you wouldn’t want to use its battery to reverse feed it back into the system and shorten the battery life on the vehicle. After all it’s not as if they are only a few quid.
