"Of all the things Aristotle tried to prove, the thing he proved most successfully was how cruel history can be. Because here was one of the most magnificent thinkers of all time, and for most of us if we know anything about him, it's a line from a Monty Python song...." - Mark Steel

As a philosophy major, this song speaks to me in a way my professor's can only dream of.

"I learned just enough philosophy in college to screw me up for the rest of my life."

Attended a small college in Rhode Island in the early 70's. First semester freshman year was classical philosophy, second semester was modern philosophy, both very early morning classes (7:30 am?). Anyways, got drafted, spent 20 years in the US Navy as a nuclear trained MMC. After I retired, my mom asked if I would come to the house and clear out some of my old stuff. One of the boxes had a bunch of my text books from college. One was on modern philosophy. In it was a test paper from that class, on which I had gotten an A. I saw that and thought "Gee, I must have been really good at philosophy." I then read the only test question, which, as I recall had something to do with Nietzsche and perspectivism. I thought "What the fuck does that mean?" I then read my answer and thought "Well, what the fuck does THAT mean?" No idea then, and no idea now.

I bought the album on which this song appeared -- Matching Tie and Handkerchief -- when it came out in 1973. I was a junior in high school, and this song was the first time I had heard of many of these philosophers. Any time I read or hear the name Immanuel Kant, my brain can't help playing this song.

A horse walks into a bar and orders a pint
.
The bartender says, “You’re in here a lot. Are you an alcoholic?”
The horse ponders for a minute, then says, “I don’t think I am.” Then Poof! He disappears.

See, the joke is about Rene Descartes' famous philosophy of "Cogito, ergo sum", or better known as “I think, therefore I am.”
I could have told you that first, but that would have been putting Descartes before the horse.

It was this song that got me through philosophy. Vodka and a keyboard got me an 88 average in that class.
