Front Porch Trellis Dreams

A couple of front porch projects I've been wanting to do!

Gorgeous. I did the same thing. I hung the same type of trellis from chains. It looked lovely until the first big summer storm and the wind destroyed it. Before it finally fell the wind whipped it sideways hard enough that it first pushed the planters enough that they no longer stopped the bottom from blowing outwards and the the bottom of the trellis smashed through the dining room window. Then the heavy duty hooks pulled out on one side and then finally the chains twisted and broke and the whole thing came down and crushed my rose bushes. Not a nice way to come home from work and see I’ll tell you. If you have strong thunderstorms in your area you might want to anchor the trellis a little more.

One important modification. Raise those planter boxes up off the wooden deck. They are a moisture trap sitting directly on the deck. The risers don't need to be very high, just enough for water to drain away and allow air flow. You could cut short lengths of 2x2 treated lumber to use as feet.

Vines on a trellis are beautiful. As long as they don't touch the house structure itself, because they work their way into the boards of the structure prying it apart. The damage causes leaks and rot. Costly. Also use wire fencing painted black, to 'float' away from the house instead of a trellis attachment to the house and seasonally pruning it away from attaching to the house will be doable, safe and beautiful. The black wire will be virtually invisible while the vine overtakes it. I'm specifically referring to vines hanging from rain gutters and a trellis stakes against the sides of the house that do the most damage. Love the new trellis and your little piece of heaven. ☺️

I love how about 3/4 way through your little guy is standing looking up to check things out. He's learning yet understands a lot for someone so young. 🙂

That worked out perfectly! There is enough space around it for air circulation and light. And, the style fits in seamlessly with the style of your home. My only suggestion would be to upgrade the ornamental chain later to one more substantial to handle the weight of the vines once they’ve grown.

You have a beautiful older home. The pillars on your front porch and the size of your front porch are endearing. The trellis idea is fantastic, and your spray paint of the antique table and chair set is magnificent accent. You can even get some cushions for the seats to make them more comfortable, or make them yourself.

That is gorgeous!!! My grandparents had something similar that attached to a pergola so the jasmine climbed over the pergola. There was jasmine on the side and top of you as you reclined on a chaise lounge and read. It was my favorite place most of my early life. Can you disclose where you bought the trellis? ❤️☮️
