Wow isn't it obvious, the puppy is keeping your items by him because it has your sent on it and it makes him feel as if you are there give him a blanket and make sure it smells like you.

A basket of toys will let her find a stuffed toy to carry around. Their retrieval instinct is strong. I often buy stuffed animals from a thrift store and remove dangerous parts.
