Have you ever had the opportunity to sit in on a VP of Product (or Chief Product Officer) interview with a candidate who was really good? In this episode we break down the candidate's answers to questions which focus on the leadership principle of Think Big. This set of questions makes sure to focus on the manager element of this principle.

Question asked: Tell me about the most complex system you have ever designed. [note: this question in this interview was targeted at a specific company instead of the total resume.]

Understanding Amazon leadership principles is a great way to prepare for any interview. In this interview and analysis I'm talking to a candidate for a VP Product or Chief Product Officer role.

What is Think Big?
Thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Leaders create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. They think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers.

What was the most interesting thing you learned from watching this clip, or takeaway from seeing a high quality VP of Product Management interview?

It was interesting to me that you didn't dive deeper into his answers or ask for "more". The candidate is great at speaking and explaining himself clearly, but I thought there was only average amount of detail in his answers. Do you feel his answers satisfied the "Dive Deep" principal?

Understandable and great, but also as a tip, your speed of talking under the intervju was really fast and a bit hard to keep up with. I understand that the thought prosess makes one often talk fast, but just a heads up if you for example intervju a person from another country :)

Its too bad that the "US" Product leaders and european one`s have So big difference in what and how they work. So looking at these clips is almost looking at a totally different job. Its so hard too find material on product leaders in the european market.

Candidate's software background clearly bleeds into their product leadership principles and detracts from their ability to speak about product through a pure product lens. Most important thing in product right now is getting diverse candidates into executive leadership, and that truly doesn't mean male Indian SWEs...I hope the industries across verticals stop playing into this stereotype so consumers can get products produced and led by thinkers of all backgrounds. Bottom line, nothing groundbreaking here.
