Standardized testing has long been the process school systems use to determine where children fall academically within their GRADE-LEVEL peers.

INTERESTED IN ONE-ON-ONE VIRTUAL SPECIAL EDUCATION TUTORING?

The problem?

There are many factors (almost countless numbers) that hinder children from being able to effectively complete a test like this... accurately.

In special education, standardized tests often lead to frustration for both children AND teachers!

If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree... that fish will go through life thinking it's a failure...

This is an old analogy but a perfect visual representation of the dangers standardized testing pose for many children!

Today, we unpack the top four reasons standardized testing doesn't work in our school system...

This information comes directly from the mouths of hundreds of special educators that we have interviewed over the years...

It’s all about selling tests. Test makers make billions each year on these tests. States could use that money to hire more teachers, have smaller classes and pay to train teachers in the latest methods. I always felt like the special education teachers were at a complete disadvantage because the students in SPED. needed so many accommodations to help them learn, yet teachers were not trained in those accommodations. Our state used to have very comprehensive tests that were harder than the tests given now. We had to dumb down our teaching in order to take time from learning to teach students how to take the test. Our kids have lost their edge with students around the world due in part to these testing mandates. Students do not need to be tested every year if their teachers are testing their learning as they go. We need to update our training for teachers in all colleges and spend money on our educators and our children especially those with special needs.

Also another issue: the schools my son has been in state that Sped kids aren't allowed on SOLS or other standardized they can get accomodations for regular class tests and quizzes, but NOT for the standardized ones. I'm in the state of VA.

YHA, we know this is true. But it is 2022, and no one is doing anything to change it, and they only keep adding questions every time u fail. For example, my English EOC was 50 questions, which went to 60. Last year was 70 or 75, and my previous test was 90 questions doesn't make sense, and no one ever goes and prepares me for testing. I get extra time, but that does not help me complete it.

There needs to be some metric to measure academic success. Standardized tests still have there place and are meant to measure everything that he mentioned. That said, special education students should not be taking the same standardized tests as those that in special education. It’s like having a foot race between someone that can run against someone in a wheelchair. Keep the standardized tests for non special education students.

Special education is so backwards. No pun intended.
