When I hear the birds chirp at the end, it's like seeing a light at the end of a tunnel after a scary encounter.

I just wanted to say thank you for putting out these stories over the years. I’m really struggling with my depression the past couple years, and these stories are a big comfort to me when I lay in bed at night.

The story where the person was an umpire, I am sorry you went through that. My son just started playing baseball in the spring and at one of his games the opposing team's families went apeshit against the umpire over two plays. One of the kids on our team caught the ball and tagged the runner. He tagged the runner with the ball in his hand and the kid was out. The other team's families went bananas, the reason I guess is that because these kids are 8 years old they are supposed to tag the runner with the ball in their glove, but most of the umps will still call an out whether the ball is in the glove or hand because they want the kids to learn how to play like the MLB.

The second play was a close call, but we had a good angle as did the ump when a player on our team slid into third and the other team had caught the ball and went to tag our kid. It was close, but our kid got his foot on the bag a few seconds before the other team tagged him. He was safe and the other team's families were yelling and cursing which the ump said to the head coach to keep them under control or he will be ejecting family members and the coach.

When their team was up they had a runner slide into third, but our kid had the ball and tagged him before his foot made it to the bag. It looked like he was safe, but the kid didn't slide far enough, he was maybe a couple of inches from touching the bag, but he was out. All the families were in an uproar and the ump shut it down ejecting a lot of family members and the coach, but the coach turned it around and said that they forfeit and threatened that the ump will never ump for his team again. The ump said he was going to report him and that he had no say so in what games he umped and if he didn't like it he could forfeit all the games he umps for them if he wants. By the way this umpire was a senior in highschool and had been playing baseball since he was three, so he was qualified and knew the rules. By the way the final score was 10-6, our win regardless because we were up by 4 runs and it was the last inning they forfeited in. We play 6 innings and our coach drove the ump to Dairy Queen to get him away from the mob of angry family members because some of them were trying to get to him to possibly beat him up.

I mean, wow, this was the only team we saw aggression towards an ump over a couple of plays. We played them again later in the season with a different ump and we beat them again 6-2, and the families were a little quieter, but still what are you showing your kids? That's not a good look and when our team loses it's okay we just practice on what we could do better. We actually made it to tournaments, but we lost in the final four, so fourth place, but not bad at all.

Just goes to show how some parents go bananas over games or in the case of this ump adults playing the game.

So the first story was familiar to me but make it a church setting. There was a very important elder in our church who would hand out candy to the little girls. Not the boys. It was special for the girls…little angels. Gross.
Anyway I was 11 and he asked me to come into his office at church so I can get some candy. I definitely didn’t like the vibe but was taught to be obedient. Fortunately the church secretary, Miss Lois, overheard and intervened.
She told my folks to keep a better eye on me but absolutely nothing happened to that elder. In fact, he still attends that church.
