Schiff is amazing.
He is so softly spoken and gentle, it really takes you by surprise when you hear him completely bossing Bartok around.

Wow and double wow. Schiff is amazing. That adagio. Seeing his touch, so idiomatic and beautiful. I cried.

This concerto (and this performance of it) is so expressive, I love it.

This is like a Hungarian goulash. A very fine goulash. Eaten with good friends, with the sounds of the street musicians drifting followed by a revere, then a village dance with many guest musicians and old friends. A wonderful performance by Schiff and orchestra. 🎉😊

With the help of a miniature score and a pianist-in-training who was learning this concerto, I wrote an analysis of this concerto's first movement as a univ. freshman (1959-60); I was already a giant Bartok fan, since age 14. Though I love this concerto, I've long thought it less than Bartok's first two. But I keep finding better and better performances of it: first by Helene Grimaud on CD, then by Martha Argerich on YouTube (in a live performance that is not available on a single, separate CD). And now this! (On CD I have an older performance of no. 3 by Schiff, with nos. 1 and 2, conducted by Boulez; to me, his performance of 1 and 2 seemed great, of no. 3 not so much.) But in this live performance I heard orchestral parts I'd never heard before, and felt that Schiff's rhythmic expressiveness is great; he really understands rubato--perhaps he plays it "parlando rubato, " in the way he or Bartok plays some of Bartok's music that transcribes, or originates but is very close to, the folk music Bartok so loved. Since buying that old CD with Boulez, I've heard a lot of Schiff's amazing Bach, which he also plays rubato at times: very subtle, yet it helps make Bach sound flowing, even lyrical, which to me is how Bach should always sound. I wonder whether so much Bach has improved Schiff's understanding of his fellow Hungarian.

To Frank Zappa, this piece of music was the most beautiful music ever written.

I’m still wrapping my head around the complex parlando rhythms of the piano in the introductory themes and their reappearances throughout the first movement ❤

Another way I see the first movement: the sun rises on a cold snow-covered scene. As the first light of dawn streaks the sky, morning birds announce the arrival of day. ❤

Ignore the negative comments (they couldn't play this in a million years) and just enjoy the music 🙂

Bartok is not to everyone’s liking, but I like him! His Concerto for Orchestra is brilliant!

Putting ads in the middle of a movement is simply disgusting
