I think in Germany regional/local sport is a bigger Thing. Football, handball, Volleyball, there are lots of Hobby players of all ages participating and having their own leagues.

Club sports was bigger then school sports all our lifes. And regarding fan culture and stadion atmosphere it is the place to go in Germany. The only European university sport event that is as big as major football or basketball college games in the US is Oxford vs Camebridge in Rowing.

Sports in the UK universities aren't very popular either. Although we do have few spectators but no more than 50-100.
