Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is one of the etiologies for orofacial pain. A multidisciplinary approach, including both non-pharmacological and pharmacological modalities, should be considered for the optimal treatment of orofacial pain. In the mechanically demanding and biochemically active environment of the TMJ, therapeutic approaches to restore joint functionality while responding to changes in the joint have become a necessity.
