I wonder if people with more money than sense just see all those 9's in the model name, and see the high price, and assume it's the best.

Some people (like me) have bought expensive motherboards back in the 8700k era, and now they want to keep the system and give it a little more lifespan.
I didn't pay that much (my i9 9900k was about 290 USD) and I'm quite satisfied with the performance bump over my old i7 8700.

I think it's because it's the best chip from a dead platform. I ran into a similar situation looking for the best FM2+ CPU for my spare PC.
Also wanted a 9900KS for my main PC but yeah too expensive. Ended up finding a really good deal on a used 9700K.

I built my 9900K system in late 2019, and it carried me through the lockdowns like a champ. My friend who wanted to be cheap built a system at the same time based on the i5-8600, because “i5s are best for gaming”, are now constantly hounding me to buy my 9900K when I eventually upgrade 😂 He is exactly the type of person who would pay full price for a 9900K to not have to build a new PC. Never underestimate laziness.

This. I just upgraded my 9900k to a 13600k and it was a decent upgrade I think. My 4070 no longer is bottlenecked. I paid about 500€ for it. So I wanted to sell my old cpu+mb so I put it out on auction. I Figured if I get 250€ for it im happy. I got about 400€.... So I just paid less then 100€ for my upgrade. Quite happy with that!

There’s been a few channels that have pointed out the increased latency of the 12th-14th gen chips. I personally haven’t noticed it on my 12700k, but if you want the lowest latency possible, you’d want 11th gen or lower.

Completely agree. I love your video's. I have been in the computer business myself for a few years (in Europe, quite small scale), and your videos always give a nice insight in your work. Would love to see more of your day to day operations (buying, warehouse, orders, shipping, customer service, everything).

I was able to get a used 12600k (which also smashes the 9900k) with 32gb 4200mhz RAM, a b660 MB, and a Noctua cpu cooler. All for $200. I was surprised!

I sold my i7-7700K last year for $200 on ebay. I assumed buyer had an i3 or i5 and wanted to upgrade without buying a new PC.

Got 9900k along with 3060ti, 48gb ram. QHD monitor, 3x ssd(system/data/cache. One pf them is super fast SN850x from WD and it is still rocking in Lightroom/PS. It handles 25mb raw files like nothing.
Bought it in 2020 exactly in September. And of course, I desperately dream of upgrading to am5 or some upcoming Intel but the desktop I have is still rock solid.

I can suggest that the answer is "coffeemod". If you have lga1051 motherboard with any chipset (even v1, like h170, z170) with descent power supply system, you can upgrade your pc with i9-9900k. You do not have to pay for new motherboard and ram (If you buy Ryzen 7 7800X3D you will need an expensive DDR5 ram and new motherboard). All you need is a small pin mod and modify BIOS of your motherboard in a program called "coffeemod". You can literary upgrade your system based on i7-6700k with i7-10700k (i9-9900k and i7-10700k are the same processors with the same performance, the only difference is lga1051 and lga1700).

He's talking brand new in box obviously theyr expensive . 8700k still going for 350+ brand new, . 9900k They selling around 140/170 bucks on ebay and that is a beast of a cpu considering it still goes strong in late 2024 and stillcan play anything strong

my dad would put this in the "more money than brains" category.

In my country this CPU is unaviable. And if it is then it goes for 180-200 €
