A Sense of Community: The untold story of Canada's 'Little Tibet'

Tucked away within Toronto’s inner city is a small enclave known as "Little Tibet".

Located in the Parkdale neighbourhood, the restaurants here are famous for delicious Tibetan dumplings known as momos.

Parkdale is also home to one of the largest concentrations of Tibetans outside Asia, stemming from the 1970s when Tibetan refugees flocked to Canada. The community has thrived here, establishing Little Tibet’s reputation as a food mecca and setting up a cultural centre.

But today, rapid gentrification and Toronto’s sky-high rents threaten the area’s unique social fabric. Amid China's increasing global influence, the Tibetan community is striving to hold on to its past and maintain its traditions in an adopted land.

Explore Little Tibet and meet an immigrant community working to preserve its identity in this episode of A Sense of Community, a four-part series about unique neighbourhoods around the world and the challenges they face.

I’m a Canadian and am so grateful for all the different cultures and communities that have come and made Canada their home. These people have made Canada so much more greater and as a Canadian I feel indebted to them. My hope is that we as Canadians continue to be a welcoming place for the displaced and repressed brothers and sisters of the world. Together, we become one.

As an Indian in Canada, so happy for my Tibetan brethren living and thriving here in Canada. Canada is bastion of acceptance. His holiness Dalai Lama is India's most treasured guest and you folks can call India home as long as time exists. May you gain your freedom and land back soon!

I lived in Parkdale for about 8 years and can personally vouch that Loga's Corner is one of the best restaurants in Toronto, and the staff was extremely friendly and hospitable.

Tibet will always have a special spot in my heart. The country is so scenic, beautiful and yet the weather can be very harsh at the same time. I had the privilege of meeting His Holiness while attending his buddhist teaching in Dharamshala 🙏 Certainly a big positive highlight in my life

I am not from Tibet, have never been there, but Tibet lives in my heart. Happy to see this echoed by so many viewers.
The people who lost their land and lives to aggressive expansionism, brought little Tibets and inspiration to many parts of the world. Good choice for Sense of Community ❤️

wow, I had no idea that there was a Tibetan community in Toronto, I am super surprised that I had to learn this from a country 1/2 way around the world & not from my own community.
Thanks Al Jazeera

I had no idea of what the Tibetan people suffered and lost until recent. And what brought it to my attention is my deep love for Tibetan dance and music. Culture preservation is powerful. May your dreams come true.
