After world war two in a rapidly changing world, young men were called up in Britain to become peacetime conscripts and do national Service.

Even after discharge, conscripts remained on the reserve force for another four years, and were liable to recall in the event of an emergency.

My grandfather was one of the men who was conscripted. He was stationed in Honk Kong but he said he absolutely loved it.

I was called up in the RAF age 20 after a 2 year deferment and posted to Kenya in 1953. A great posting, teeming with wild game and dramatic scenery. I discovered first hand, how other people lived and their vastly different culture. Kenya, provided a great opportunity for me. I stayed there after Demobilization and employed in a Managerial Position strait from the RAF. I gained skills which enabled me to develop an overseas career and live in different countries and eventually retired comfortably in Thailand. National Service was a Godsend.

In Brazil is still mandatory, however, 70% of the enlisted are dismissed. I wanted to join, i will finish my mandatory year soon.

My Grandad had to do national service. He was never in combat but he drove a couple of armored cars and was stationed in Germany for a while.

My grand father did National Service in Japan and he loved it.

Best thing that ever happened to British 18 year olds. My grandad served in Egypt and loved it, he found it a very valuable experience. So did my mum's uncle, who served in Italy, Egypt and Malta.
