Hermes Trismegistus, known as the thrice greatest Hermes, laid out the esoteric doctrines of ancient Egyptian priesthood, equated with the god Thoth. Hermes authored 42 sacred books, the Hermetic Mysteries, containing secret wisdom on priesthood education, temple rituals, astrology, and more. These texts influenced European alchemy, astrology, and magic. Orpheus, central to the Orphic Mysteries, transformed Dionysian rites and taught about Dionysus Zagreus, whose cycle of birth, death, and rebirth reflected the human soul's journey. Orphic practice focused on soul purification through reincarnation, aiming for redemption and release from the cycle of rebirth.
