The Untold Story Of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad @raftartv

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad — a man too free to fit into any box.
Not a Mufti. Not a Sheikh-ul-Hadith. Not a graduate of any traditional madrasa.
Yet, at the age of 24, he created an Islamic organization, dreamed of an Islamic government, only to become the loudest voice against the idea of Partition years later.
Why did the man once called "Imam-ul-Hind" refuse to divide India in the name of Islam?
What changed him so drastically—from a passionate revolutionary to a secular visionary?
How did his falling out with Deobandi leaders like Sheikh-ul-Hind shape his life forever?
In this documentary, you’ll find the answers — and a journey of a man who chose reason over division.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a complex and evolving thinker whose views transformed significantly over time...perhaps even as a deliberate intellectual journey. In his early years, he emerged as a passionate Islamic revivalist, deeply influenced by Islamic thinkers and reformist thinkers like Jamal al Din al Afghani and Muhammad Abduh, who emphasized Islamic unity, anti-colonial resistance, and the renewal of Muslim civilization.
His journal Al Hilal wasn’t just a publication but it became a powerful platform for mobilizing Indian Muslims around ideas of Pan Islamism, revivalist thought, and resistance to Western imperialism. Through it, Maulana Azad quickly rose to prominence as one of the most influential Muslim voices of his time.
For a period, he was also an intellectual contemporary of likes of Allama Iqbal, sharing similar concerns about the decline of the Muslim world, the need for spiritual awakening, and the dangers of Western materialism. Azad admired Iqbal’s work, and their early writings resonated with one another in tone and vision.
Interestingly, Maulana Azad’s early ideological leanings especially as expressed in Al-Hilal also bore notable similarities to those of likes of Maulana Maududi, particularly in their shared calls for Islamic resurgence, strengthening muslims ideologically and politically, global Muslim unity, and critiques of secular nationalism and colonial domination.

After WWI, the fall of the Ottoman Caliphate, and the rise of ethnic nationalism, Azad realized his pan Islamic vision was unfeasible especially in India, where Muslims were a minority. He gradually shifted focus, joined the Congress, aligned with Gandhi, and embraced a secular, inclusive nationalism without abandoning his faith. Azad opposed Jinnah, rejected the two-nation theory, and warned that Partition would harm Muslims, especially those remaining in India. Post-Partition, he stayed in India, became the first Education Minister, and championed modern, pluralistic education.
Yet I personally feel today, while his warnings about Pakistan seem accurate, his hopes for Indian Muslims haven’t been fulfilled either. I myself am from same region and Indian Muslims face growing marginalization, opression amid rising Hindutva and RSS influence. Azad’s legacy is fading...he was excluded even from official freedom fighter posters, and his secular education policies are being dismantled.

Still, I strongly urge every Muslim from the subcontinent to read Azad’s works, especially Al-Hilal, to understand how deeply he influenced Muslim political thought in the early 20th century...and to reflect on the challenges of balancing faith and identity.

Maulana Azad was a great visionary and leader who fought for his nation and wanted to unite the Muslims and Hindus together unlike Jinnah who divided people on the basis of religion.

Maulana Abul Kalaam Azad was a genius, a visionary, a true nationalist (read as a well wisher of muslims and hindus) & 50 years ahead of his time.
He never agreed to Mr. Jinnah's two nation theory and opposed the partition of India till the creation of pakistan on 14-08-1947.
He knew that partition will make the muslims the greatest sufferer/looser and would render & transform the 33% muslims of the subcontinent from a position of force (to reckon with), to a position of spent force. And this really happened within a span of 25 years, after the partition of pakistan or the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, proviing that two nation theory was unfounded and unpragmatic/unfeasable.
33% muslims( a significant force ) are, now, divided into three countries who are not maintaining good neighbourly relations, rather two countries are inimical to eachother. In one country the muslims have lost their peace of mind.
One point where maulana Azad blundered :
He couldn't read the real mind of Mountbatten and a few of the brahmins/ non brahmins among his colleagues ( freedom fighters) including his closest friend and the mentor.( this last remark/ opinion is my personal view. One may disagree).
Conclusion: He died as a dejected & crestfallen man despite being a genius and a visionary. He didn't get the respect and honour that he so rightly deserved as the most towering national leader of contemporary India. His dream of an united India( akhand bharat) was shattered by the muslim league leaders as well as his own Congress party, whose top leaders betrayed him.
Note: The tittle " Bharat Ratna" ( India's highest civilian award) conferred upon him posthumously in 1988 was returned undelivered from Kolkata. There was no one to receive !
2. He spent 3519 days in different jails as against Jawaharlal's 3265 days during the freedom struggle !!
This is not highlighted in the current Indian history.

Jinnah ki 2 nation theory practical nahi hai wo ab bhi nazar aa raha hai.

Aur abul kalam azad ne bilkul sahi kiya tha jab iske against khade hue the.

Agar partition naa hota to india me muslims itne dabe hue nahi rehte aur Pakistanis itne peeche nahi rehte. Fizool ki jang naa hoti aur hum aaj bohot aage hote.

Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad was a romantic...
He never believed and accepted partition of India
He fought with Cong and Nehru and Gandhi on this issue and became very bitter
But history tells us that Gandhi Nehru and Patel were more futuristic and had better understanding of India: they accepted partition and how correct it has proved...
If Pakistan was part of India then India too would have been a limping nation and forever begging for money internationally...
Thank God for the wisdom and foresight of Nehru Patel and Gandhi for agreeing to partition 🙏
