Metallica - Frantic but it's 23% more frantic

Frantic, like much of Metallica's 2003 album St Anger, is one of those songs that is chock full of incredible riffs and an honest, aggressive energy. But it's also 6 minutes long. My friend Nick and I decided to whittle the song down to its core components and throw our own twist on it!

The idea was to bridge the divisive conversation about St Anger - If you love the original, you may think this is just pretty good... If you hate the original, though, you just might find that this version is actually pretty good!

LYRICS:
If I could have my wasted days back,
Would I use them to get back on track?
Stop to warm at karmas burning
Or look ahead, but keep on turning?

Do I have the strength to know how I'll go?
Can I find it inside to deal with what I shouldn't know?
Could I have my wasted days back
Would I use them to get back on track?

You live it or lie it!
(You live it or lie it)

Always thought this album would be massively improved with just some trimming (and better production, of course). The songs themselves have a lot of good parts, they just repeat endlessly until you hate them.

Todd's harsh vocals are so gnarly, don't know how he does it. Love the screaming duet at the end.

God damn how is your sound so good? Its like a thick and rich syrup of sound poured into my ears.

Listening again, and realised that this song (and presumably others on St Anger) are raised simply by using a decent sounding drum kit. One of my lecturers at university when I was studying sound production said that the St Anger snare sounded like, and I quote, "a skeleton having a wank in a biscuit tin".

The length and the vocals improved this soooo much. Really, killer vocals man.

Love this cover, and I actually love the original song. St Anger has a couple of okay songs, but it was clearly an album that needed to happen for Metallica's sake. They were clearly not in a good place, and the fact they managed to push St Anger meant they could get through anything. Death Magnetic and Hardwired are great, imo. So for that reason I'm glad St Anger exists.

That was KILLER! Thank you for correctly writing this song. I was 12 and thinking “did they forget to finish this song?”

This is really good. I was a Metallica stalker before and during the St. Anger period. I remember in interviews the band said they were going for a rough garage feel. And went on to say that they used cuts that they knew the guitars had gone out of tune somewhere in the mix. I thought oh know that does not sound good. Then the album came out. I listened to it a lot. And everytime I liked it a little more. I always felt there was a classic album in their somewhere. Years later You Tube comes along and talented fellows like you proved it. You live it or lie it.

I literally just found your channel and I'm absolutely FLOORED by your versatility. Some of your pop punk stuff has you soaring, some really cool voice cracks, the sum 41 stuff definitely impressed me, but this is a whole new level. I have so much I can learn from you and it makes me so fuckin happy.

The tuning of the guitars, the evenness of the drums, the synchronization of the parts, and the mixing/mastering of the track were all better than the original. And I feel like the original has no excuse on the mixing/mastering front, given that it was released in 2003, a year after Disturbed put out Believe.
