Greensleeves, (Traditional) - arr. Alfred Reed

This arrangement has long been acknowledged as the standard to have in your band library. While not technically difficult, a high level of musicianship can really bring out the beauty in this piece. The simple folk melody has been developed and orchestrated into a marvelous work of emotion. In this fine edition, Dr. Reed offers new program notes and rehearsal suggestions. Highly recommended.

I lost my high school band teacher yesterday, Mr. David Nebrig. We played this song every Christmas. It was one of his favorites. He adored Alfred Reed’s music and this piece is one of the many that stick out and remind me of Mr. Nebrig. He pushed me to be the best that I could be. He always made sure that I had faith in myself because he always had faith in me. He made me first chair when I was a sophomore when there was a senior who played oboe as well. He told me: “if I didn’t have trust and faith in you and your abilities, do you think I would have put you there? Believe in yourself, don’t be hard on yourself. I will help you get there.”

And he did. Because of him I was able to get into All-County, All-District and All-State bands. I remember how proud he was of me when I was able to do those things. He pulled me aside and patted me on the back and gave me a hug when I first made all-state. “You see? You can do anything you put your mind to. Believe in yourself, have faith in yourself because I always will.”

Played this my freshman year at HS and man.. it inspired me to play euphonium. Along with a really chill section leader. But this piece cemented what playing a euphonium was. GL to all the euphoniums playing this and also have fun, enjoy playing music.

This was one of my favorite pieces my band played during the holidays, it's such a beautiful piece and just the feeling you get when you are playing it is just amazing. The connections and feeling/emotion put into playing it was incredible and just having those rests and being able to listen to everyone else was just so breathtaking.

3:40 When that huge french horn/saxophone part comes in when they just rip that sound, I always get so excited from there on~ Just the huge wall of sound from all the sections from that point is just masterful~~

This was our seasonal mainstay for 16 years straight as I directed the band at my
old high school. Such a great piece and much more difficult than it sounds and
looks. Many moving parts to the puzzle and each is very important. A very good
piece for the teaching of phrasing, intonation, nuance and balance.

I recently played this at my winter concert and it’s just so beautiful. I’m an alto Sax player and I loved it. It’s just absolutely gorgeous. The first time the band played it all together I almost cried. It’s just gorgeous
