Did you know that baseball and basketball have the highest incidence of sports-related dental injuries in children ages 7 to 17? The National Federation of State High School Associations Sports Medicine Advisory Committee recommends that athletes wear mouthguards when playing a sport that requires a bat, ball or stick. Scott Lee, DDS, of Wigwam Creek Dental Care (a Delta Dental provider) in Litchfield Park, also recommends a custom-fitted mouthguard. Watch him fit his 11-year-old son Andrew with one to help absorb the shock from a potential blow to the face and limit the risk of a chipped or broken tooth.

For example, in football, you don't wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth you wear it to absorb shock to stop a concussion.
