I learned that from your you tube videos a few years ago, really helped.

By "wire", I'm assuming that you mean chain or cable? At the release of the stroke there is little tension on either the c2 or water-rower. What the coach here is explaining is rowing more like in the boat, tapping down at the release and then getting the hands out followed by the body as opposed to straight out. The purpose of the recovery is to relax everywhere possible. Straight out is unnecessary tension on the shoulders.

In a boat you want to drop your arms on the recovery to keep your oar off the water.

hmm. I see your point. She is doing the shortest distance--but maybe there's a bit more muscle usage than going with the relaxed curve. But even with the curve you have to hold the handle above lap, so still using some muscle...

Last time I checked 'rowing was a rowing sport'(you have to get the blades out of the water anyways! ;-))) )

Where can I find a longer version of the video you used to show the correct form?

I mean my coach gets mad at me when I don’t extend my arms fast enough…😂 maybe for people use rowing as cardio this is true (on the erg we always have to try to keep the handle steady on the recovery without doing exactly what you’re recommending)

So... *why* is this not good? Biomechanics? Engaging a different set of muscles? Agreed a stroke like that is *bad* on the water...

That’s not true. Indoor rowing technique and rowing on the water are two different techniques. The videos are absolutely correct for an indoor rowing machine. Go and watch the pros doing races. 100% correct. You drop down on the return for on the water rowing to get the blades out of the water.

It looks like it's just a function of the position of the wire and tension on her arms. Not that she is punching it back into place.
Different angles on the different machines.
