Awesome video. I used to take collagen powder but stopped when I changed to a whole food plant based diet several years ago. I now use turmeric and curcumin.

I started taking collagen a year ago. Did feel like my pain decreased, however when I started taking collagen cofactors- Vit c, choline & silica - that significantly decreased my pain. Side effect - for the first time in my life I have long natural fingernails. I’m 59yo female and nails were always weak& wld tear. These supplements will remain in my protocol forever!

Yes, I was just wondering who funded especially the first study. I’ve been using T2 collagen since before my right TKA, and only notice a difference in my skin, nothing to do with your video, but think I look younger, brighter, tighter when I’m taking it. No difference in my left knee at all. I definitely feel pain from working long shifts as an ICU NP. I really think it has to do with being dehydrated. Considering PRP if it gets worse. I really don’t want another TKA, that’s just no fun at all. Thanks, you give absolutely the best information ❤️

Great video. I suggest a follow-up vid covering supplements that might be helpful for meniscal and/or ACL damage (assuming there's enough research to come to a conclusion). I think there's a ton of folks out here who could benefit. Thanks!

Thanks for the great videos doc. I understand your conclusion and sadly there are not more studies on this subject. I am going to be adding Marine (I am a Pescitarian, hence why I am going to use this type of collegen.) collagen to my daily regime. The cost of supplementing with a collagen source is not all that great even if it may only be a small benefit. Currently I am taking Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM and high absorption turmeric/Salmon oil and Krill oil. I am 56/male and somewhat active. I have been told that I have arthritis on the backside of my Patella on the right knee and in my left shoulder. For the most part I never take NSAIDs for the pain as the pain is manageable compared to the downside of continuos NSAID ingestion. I do feel that after I am on the above list of OTC products for awhile that the pain is not completely alleviated but that it is dulled/blunted significantly.

My mother is in her early 60s. I started buying collagen type 1-4. I did research on the difference between the numbers so I got the one that has them all. She has arthritis and often complains. She took collagen powder in her drinks and yogurt for around six months straight. I saw personally her problems ease up to the point she didn’t go a single day complaining. It helped her considerably. Then she stopped taking it one day and didn’t go back and again saw her problems come back. I noticed the huge difference between her on it and without it so I absolutely do believe it helped her. But she’s been stubborn about restarting thinking it won’t help with the pain (because she’s having it bad again) when I myself noticed it. I’d say if you do have arthritis to find the type that has I-IV and give it a month or two but it must been taken daily. It’s easy for people to stop a routine and forget about it. I’ve seen people complain about parts of their body when they eat bad but will continue to eat terribly because they think it’ll hurt anyway even if they switch to healthy “so why not”.

Dear Dr Peng,

I have a simple question: I am in mid 50s, male, active in life and sports. But sadly I have had some neck and back injuries (herniated discs), and due to age as well. I start developing some problems. My question is that I am wondering if collegen would help my spine to keep it healthy? If so, how much I should be using it?

Statistics only point to a possible improvement using glucosamine. But real research should be undertaken to propose a mechanism of action and proof using MRI before and after taking the supplement.

Thank you very much for such a great video Dr. Peng. I have got a relevant question: I am 40 and have been running and swimming for the last couple of years but I frequently get injured, suffering mostly from tendon issues (posterior tibial tendinitis, biceps and supraspinatus tendinitis) and muscle strains (hamstring and calf). It is quite frustrating as I try not to overload and compy with warming up and stretchings before and after each session. I have heard that type II collagen may help in preventing repeated tendon and muscle injuries. I would highly appreciate if you could share your opinion with this regard. Obviously, any other recommendation you might make would be most welcome. I thank you very much in advance and wish you all the best from Turkey.

Dr. Ping you are quite right in criticizing the deficiency of these studies on type II collagen. However, we must consider risks versus benefit. If a person is facing the risk of joint replacement surgery, and add the risk of age influencing the first risk and compares that to the risk of shelling out a little cash to buy a supplement that is unproven, which may have benefit, or may not, it seems to me that the risk to benefit ratio of the latter is clearly much smaller than the risk to benefit ratio of the joint replacement surgery. So each person must decide for themselves of course, but if I have a possible treatment that has essentially no risk, i.e. collagen, and there is a potential benefit, then, inverting the risk/benefit ratio to a benefit/risk ratio, we have a number, comparing possible benefit divided by zero risk. The benefit/risk ratio then approaches infinity! It seems like a no-brainer! Why not go for it? We can be our own experiment!

What about regularly eating bone broth? Traditionally this has always been considered an incredibly wholesome, nutritious and easily digested food both for invalids and others, and if made properly (with a small amount of vinegar or wine to lower the pH and simmered for at least six hours) contains a huge amount of collagen. Like that, you can avoid taking supplements of dubious origin and sometimes doubtful efficacy, and save a lot of money. Bones can be obtained free from most butchers and the only cost is the cooking fuel. You can also make large batches and sterilise it in bottles to last for weeks or months. Add it to soups, stews and sauces and to deglaze pans after cooking meat for an ultra concentrated nutritious and delicious gravy.

Are there any studies on the efficacy of bone broth for osteoarthritis?
