A compilation of this month’s clips. Tunings demonstrated DAd, C# G# c#, CGc, B F# b, A# F# a#, AEa, G# D# g#, GDG, F# C# f# and FCf.

The word “douzeni” (plural “douzenia”) entered the Greek language from Ottoman Turkish “düzen” (plural “düzenler”), meaning “order”. It was used to describe a stringed instrument’s tuning. When something is called “düzenli”, it means it’s tidy. When it’s “düzensiz”, it is untidy. Today, Greeks call their tunings “kourdisma” (plural “kourdismata”) or “hordisma” (plural “hordismata”).

The douzenia are still remembered by six string bouzouki players as the the old tunings of contemporary rembetiko music on bouzouki, baglamas, saz, oud, guitar and co. I have posted plenty of douzenia here before, but this time we will start in standard tuning DAd and tune lower and higher each time. Staying in this modal interval that has become the standard and is neither major nor minor, I will emulate how these instruments used to have different kinds of scale lengths and string gauges until recently (ca. 1950s), and therefore were tuned to different pitches.

Sounds great. Do you recommend the heavier 10 gauge strings you mentioned in comments are better for the lower tunings but not for Dad tuning? Just need to make sure before i try them. Thank you

Can you achieve all of these tunes with the same set of strings? Thank you for the video
