2024 US Election | Race too close to call between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

With two weeks to go until election day in the United States, some 17 million ballots have already been cast across multiple states that allow early voting. This comes as polls -- both nationally and in the crucial swing states -- point to a close contest between Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump and his Democratic opponent and current Vice President Kamala Harris.
In just the latest example of that, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Harris with a marginal lead over Trump nationally - 46% to 43% - while the numbers in the key swing states that will determine which candidate wins the Electoral College and thus the White House, are simply too close to call.
Our US Correspondent Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports that the Electoral College is where the campaigns are almost entirely focused.

4:44 Trump is leading in every swing state. "non-swing" states like New Mexico, Virginia, and Minnesota will have closer margins than swing states like North Carolina. Trump is running away with this thing.

1:31 This map should be taken with a grain of salt. Many traditionally blue states like Virginia are in play for Trump. Kamala is such a weak candidate that she is bleeding support everywhere. Voter registration trends with early voting results already makes victory for Kamala virtually impossible.

0:45 That is an egregious, blatant lie. The electoral college exists to prevent densely populated areas from becoming too important. If it was decided by a popular vote the candidates would only campaign in major metropolitan areas like New York, Miami, and Los Angeles without a care for the pleight of the ordinary citizin. Another reason is because their states are not like provinces in South Africa. They are essentially independent (although not sovereign) nations in a union. Therefore, every state has to be represented in the electoral process. If it was just based on the popular vote many states like Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, or Hawai would be meaningless.
