I'm not convinced by ARM for Windows notebooks. The fastest ARM in the world - the Snapdragon 8cx is roughly comparable with an i5-8250U. You can get faster Intel CPUs than the rather middling 8250U.

And these machines will run x86 code by JITting to ARM code. So Office, for example, will be JITted to ARM code before it can be run. Even if that JIT process is 100% efficient there is still going to be a working set hit - you need to have both the x64 code and the x86 code in memory to do the JIT. And Intel has threatened Microsoft and Qualcomm about their patents.

What that probably means is that the JITter can't convert SSE instructions, which are still patented, into NEON. And in fact, it can't run any instructions via emulation or JIT which are still patented. So you're looking at a 486 level instruction set. No SSE, and no x64 compatibility even though at this point a lot of applications have moved to 64 bit.

It's like x86 compatibility on Risc chips back in the NT days. You could only run x86 Win16 applications on a MIPS/Alpha PPC/Workstation, not Win32 ones. The difference is that back in the NT 4.0 says Win16 compatibility on Risc CPUs was done by Insignia Solutions' SoftPC which was a pure instruction by instruction emulator whereas now Win32 compatibility on ARM will be done by JIT. However, look at that Intel threat. And then imagine what x86 features can't be implemented for legal reasons - namely any SIMD instructions at all, and certainly no x64 since x64 mandates SSE for floating-point as part of its ABI.

Early benchmark results for emulated code on a Snapdragon 835 were not impressive. The HEVC codec result is probably because the JITter is not allowed to convert SSE to Neon.

Sure the 8cx is a faster chip but it really needs to be *much* faster to be credible.

Also, as you point out, $999 is way too much for this thing. I hope I'm wrong and ARM is competitive to Intel, because Intel could use more competition in the ultrabook market which chips like the i5-8250U are aimed and were AMD isn't all that good, but I'm not optimistic.

I would rather see Linux on something like this running code compiled for ARM

Just bought one of these and I am looking forward to putting it through its paces. Hopefully I can put Windows10Pro on it. Gota get a good Micro SD and SIM for it too soon. Samsung FTW.
