When Lou went out on his own in 1987 - Ready or Not was a great album, headlined by Midnight Blue an instant classic. The same year he wrote/performed Lost in the Shadows which was the best song on the Lost Boys Soundtrack (which included INXS, Roger Daltrey, Echho and the Bunnymen). Two years later he released Long Hard Look which included solid songs including Just Between You and Me and Angel With A Dirty Face. Then two years he wrote every song for Shadow King with Bruce Turgeon. The album received positive reviews but commercially not promoted as grunge was taking over. That year also wrote/performed 'One Dream' for Highlander 2 - another solid performance. Over all his solo songwriting in 5 years 1987 and 1991 was very successful.

Conversely, Mick Jones did three albums without Gramm. His self-titled solo album released in 1989 was terrible. He had support from Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Ian Hunter, Joe Lynn Turner and more, but the music was uninspired and Lyrics were basically bad clichés. Then in 1991 Foreigner released Unusual Heat with Johnny Edwards on vocals. Again the lyrics were weak e.g. Lowdown and Dirty. In 2009, Foreigner released Can't Slow Down with Kelly Hansen on vocals. I would rate this album as solid and clearly Jones best song-writing effort without Lou Gramm.

In sum, Lou Gramm is typically recognized for his elite vocals and the soul that comes through in his performances. But comparing the solo song-writing of Gramm versus Mick Jones - there really isn't a comparison - Lou wins hands down. This isn't recognized enough.

To be clear Jones and Gramm together did some great work and Jones role was crucial. But believe that (1) Gramm was the better lyricist and (2) Gramm brought soul into Foreigner's original songs that hasn't been replicated. Kelly does a decent job copying Lou's performances and is a solid front man - but Gramm's contribution to the creation of the classics was essential.

It's great hearing from Lou and getting his side of everything. Here's a classic rock icon telling us fame and fortune isn't all glitz and glamour and can really suck. Lou is the best of the best of rock frontmen and it seems maybe some colleagues and people in the industry were threatened by that...

I was fortunate to see Foreigner in San Antonio promoting Mr. Moonlight in '96 or so and they were fantastic. I really like that album and it's a shame it didn't sell well under the circumstances.

😥 I so wish I could've seen Foreigner back in the day. Lou Gramm is such a class act. This band actually helped shaped music in the Rock and Pop relm, as well as the CCM and Black Gospel sector.

This is by far the best interview I ever watched!

Lou wasn't blowing smoke. Mr. Moonlight is a great record! Every track is happening! The ballad, "Until The End of Time" is a good as any they ever recorded. I was very fortunate to meet Lou after his first show back in Foreigner in '92 at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT. He couldn't have been nicer or more gracious. Throughout the show, the crowd was chanting, "LOU! LOU!! LOU!!" He kept saying, "No, YOU! YOU!! YOU!!!" It was a phenomenal show and a night I'll never forget! Thank you, Lou, for the music and your humble grace. They say don't meet your heroes, but Lou blasted that whole thing to smithereens! Coolest guy in the biz.

I was fortunate to see Lou with Foreigner when he came back. It was at Jones Beach Theater in NY with The Doobie Brothers opening.

Thank you so much for what you do! Always interesting, and you bring out the human side of these people's stories and experiences. That sometimes gets lost in the "star-making" machinery/industry. Thank you!

I believe that Lou Gramm was a great vocalist till 1995, then he had healthy problems but he was still a good vocalist since 1995 till present, i heard his last album with his band and he sounds good, the songs are not as strong as in Foreigner albums but still good songs and good vocals, for me Lou Gramm will always be one of the best voices in rock history along with Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury, i wish Lou Gramm long life and good health and to continue to do music.

It took some years for Lou's voice to recover following is health problems and his health had did obvious damage and hitting the notes was difficult. Yet he continued to work hard and recovered to a point, but I have to admire Lou's strength and determination to recover. He has done an amazing amount of work. God bless you Lou, God bless Foreigner and the great music they have produced.
