It's actually a pure skill. Getting your enemy out of the zone is part of the duel, just like how Sumo does.

If you notice the text that indicates the timer gets delayed due to trying to use abilities on cooldowns thus the missleading "2 seconds left".

It was actually a skill as bait you to go for the 4m outside the ring is not easy and you also can't knock Jim out while he was at the outside ring too, he is completely risking the 4m and you lost it

You can switch skill when challenged to a duel. Switching boots to roll might be a good idea.
