I had the great pleasure of chatting for an hour with Arkady Martine, author of the Hugo-award-winning A Memory Called Empire and the forthcoming A Desolation Called Peace, under the auspices of the Brooklyn Book Festival and NYU's 370 Jay Project and NYU Skirball.

I absolutely geeked out over this video. Last year I read A Memory Called Empire and haven't stopped gushing over it since then. And this year, This is How You Lose The Time War and A Desolation Called Peace are easily on my top 5 books of the year. It was so good to hear the background stories of both those books.

Wonderful conversation, so rich and substantial. Thank you for posting this. As an academic who is dipping a toe into science fiction writing this was an absolute treat from start to finish (and especially the early discussion regarding the academy and affect). Martine's A Memory Called Empire was my favorite SF of 2019. I can't wait for A Desolation of Peace to release.

This was great! I'll have to rewatch. some of these lines of thought slot into some of the worldbuilding I'm doing for a new story so it resonates quite strongly.

Loved this conversation with two of my favorite writers!
Is there a list of references to the books and authors discussed here?

Thank you so much! Two of my favorite authors talking about what they love.

Please add a comment with the name of that sci-fi story from the 50s that was discussed around 47-49 minutes in.

Why would anyone want to read anything written by an ivory tower elitist?
