Welcome to a world first. This is the new GranTurismo Folgore. When it arrives next year, it’ll be Maserati’s first pure EV. And it’s quite something: a tri-motor layout powered by a 92kwh battery and developing 750bhp.

There will be no hybrid option, but as well as this all-electric model the marque will offer the GranTurismo with the MC20 supercar’s twin-turbo V6 Nettuno motor with either 483bhp (in the entry level Modena version) or 542bhp (for the Trofeo).

But electric is the clever one, able to divvy power up between the motors and do complex torque vectoring stuff through corners. Range is quoted at 280 miles on the WLTP cycle. Petrols are likely to be around the £150k mark, this Folgore closer to £200,000. The name, by the way. It roughly translates as lightning or thunderbolt, and will be applied to all electric Maseratis in future. Folgore versions of the MC20 supercar and Grecale SUV will follow soon after.

Top Gear Magazine’s Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage, got behind the wheel on track to tell us all about it.

this has to be the best-looking car I have ever seen. it is not weirdly shaped like hyper cars, nor it looks normal. it is just right there in the middle. I love it

I've owned 2 GranTurismos; a 2008 4.2L and 2014 4.7L and I don't think I could do without the sound of the V8 with this car. Even the new V6 doesn't sound that great in comparison. Still beautiful tho.

It's really cool that you can have either a pure ICE powertrain or a full EV. I'm very interested to see what the take-rate will be for both cars.

All the looks of a 15-year old GranTurismo with none of the noise!

A Maserati without an exhaust note is absolutely pointless.

its gorgeous - alot of people have been bashing maserati, especially after the ghibli, but they have some of the most gorgeous, amazing sounding cars in the market.... and that interior is stunning!

It's nice but a shame that they didn't make the Alfieri as a production car . That would have been the prettiest car ever . I would brought 2 . One to drive and spare one to drive when the first was at the car wash .

What a beauty! Italians have taken on the mission of saving the car design, they know better than everyone else combined.

This is gorgeous. Love the nod to the past in design but keeping with modernity. Can't wait to see what to full interior looks like

I don't have anything against EVs.
I really like the Taycan and R1S.
But sorry, a Maserati EV is just not a good idea. Maserati as a brand has little else to offer than a good engine and a nice sound. Taking that away really makes you question why you should take this over a Taycan, E-Tron GT or similar vehicles. Because the styling, although neat and clean, isn't going to replace the engine for that brand.

It looks like the 599 gto, Maserati really make gorgeous cars and this folgore version plays it safe by not veering to far from the design.

As a Maserati driver I thank you for this great review of the new GT Folgore. It’s past its ultimatum test: it put a smile on your face….

Owning a 2008 Maserati GT, I love seeing they didn't change the body style of it. Beautiful car!!!

I need to hear what the electric performance sound profile for this car is gonna be like. It needs to be engaging and smile-inducing like the old V8 did so well. I got something around the 8:45 mark, but i really want to hear some raw footage, sound is important in a Maserati gran tourer for me, probably because the old Garn Turismo was one of the most obnoxious sounding GTs ever. Regardless, fingers crossed for Maserati, they’re a cool brand and have the potential to be the Italian Porsche. here’s to hoping they go in the right direction.
