One thing about this movie I realized is it is just as much a disaster movie as it is a horror movie. Like in many disaster movies, particularly the ones that would follow a few years later, the characters are stuck in a situation where they have to band together and try to survive in a situation where things are falling apart all around them.

Released months earlier in July of 1968, “Fando Y Lis” from Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky has a scene where the dead rise from their mud graves like zombies.

On the commentary he jokingly claims to have invented zombies before Romero did (NotLD being released in October). Arguable, perhaps…but I think Romero created flesh eaters for sure (they’re even eating bugs here, which is significant in the lore of zombies).
