Rosehips with Julie James + Rosehips Electuary Recipe

Rosehips are famous for their vitamin C content, but as herbalist Julie James will tell you, “[Vitamin C] is the least sexy part of rose hips.”

That’s because rosehips are filled with so many benefits that go way beyond vitamin C! For example, we’ll share how one of its most underrated gifts is for modulating inflammation.

In this episode, you’ll hear all about rosehips, plus you’ll get Julie’s yummy Rosehip Electuary recipe. Imagine having a spoonful of this super-easy sweet treat every day, knowing that as it melts in your mouth you’re getting vitamin C and other rosehips nutrients.

In case you’re not already familiar with her, Julie is the owner of Green Wisdom Herbs in Long Beach, CA, a full service herb shop and school, where she has cultivated an herbal community dedicated to improving access to healing plants and to reliable herbal information. She teaches classes in person and sometimes online, with her primary focus being her 2 year herbal apprenticeship, through which she has sent hundreds of new herbalists into the world. Having spent over 30 years as an herbalist, she delights in sharing her love of plants by combining science and magic, awe and intellect, and by encouraging folks to get their hands dirty, bodies nourished, bellies filled, and minds blown.

Listen in for:

► Why ingesting the whole plant gives you the most benefits

► Why an electuary can be an ideal (not to mention delicious) way to receive all that rose hips have to offer

► Why you might want to buy rosehips already cut and sifted, rather than growing and harvesting your own

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“I always feel like I’m missing something in a tea because I’m not ingesting the whole plant.” (Timestamp: 19:17)

I loved spending time with Julie and I’m so happy to share our conversation with you today!

I love how rosehips can stay on the bush sometimes all winter and can offer a great wild food to keep us going during the dark and cool times!!

Your channel is fantastic. You deserve more views and followers for sure. It blows my mind so few people are interested in herbalism nowadays, even with all of the information available online.

Rosalee, I just discovered your channel and subscribed and rang the bell immediately. 🥰
I watch lots of videos about herbs and foraging and I love learning all I can about herbs,
and it is great to hear different herbalist’s perspective about them.
I make a lot of my own medicine, often harvested here at home.
I’m really enjoying your videos and I think you are one of the best interviewers!
You ask just the right questions and you give the people you interview the time to finish their thoughts.
I love how you ask at the end what they wish they had known when they first started their herbal journeys.
It’s very enlightening!
I love your enthusiasm for herbs and and how you are so genuine and personable.
You do such a great job here on YouTube.
I’m off to watch some more of your videos!

Thank you for this interview, admitting you use way more than you harvest gives me incentive to play around the electuary, sounds so good!

So interesting - and what she said about the nettles and Turmeric - I've never liked them - keep thinking I should take them for inflammation but they always turn me off. And I love rose hips....so will keep on keeping on with them for inflammation! Thank you!

Loving this! I’m working my way through. Just a question on the rosehips and apple juice to make jam. Do you still boil them? Or is the pectin high enough that you don’t need to do this?

So informative! Thank you ladies. I love making hibiscus rosehip tea. I want to know if I ordered rosehips in a bag you recommend buying whole or powdered? If buying whole, will the bag say "de-seeded" on it? Are you able to give link?I bought them before and don't think I saw hairs on it

Hi Rosalie. Loved the video. Thank you. I have a grinder but it is unable to grind the Rose hip. Can you recommend a grinder for this?
