Thank you, this is very helpful. I never realized how much I looked at artpieces mindlessly, without even considering “the buttons” that make them work

"Do you really know what you like?" That is a funny question and a very relevant one. For example, I used to think I loved burgundy... and I do. But I actually only like the color itself and the mood it creates in images. I hate it in decor and I don't like it in most clothing. It is a wonderful color in the way it feels; seeing it in nature and paintings gives me a rich and cozy feeling or, in darker subjects, a feeling of depth and enclosure. It is all about perspective and, as you said, really thinking about it.

Haha, you did make a video about finding your artstyle, but it's the best video out there and it's not even close.
You are not giving us food, you are teaching us how to fish.

Watching this after buying 4 art books today during my trip to Japan... Tatsuya Bookstores, Mandarake and Bookoff are dangerous for art books hoarders...

Man I've collects so many books on art and never feel like I've properly used them cause I never feel ready to do so. Maybe its time to go through all of my collection and make notes of each and what I like and can learn from each.

I felt so seen when you referenced the Dune art book in the portion about books that aren’t necessarily good. I preordered it and was so excited to learn about the decisions that went into designing the world and I couldn’t have been more disappointed. The concept artists who worked on the film were online sharing these incredible pieces and insights that weren’t featured in the book at all! While I’m glad I took the chance on buying it your advice to see if an art book can be outclassed by finding the same images online really applies here.

I have the same habit. I recently reorganized my art and how to draw books, and I put the ones I'm always sifting through my shelf to find closer to my desk, so I don't need to walk to my shelf to find them.

My favorite art book is the Adventure Time one. Tons of interviews of people who worked on the show, with the whole process of episodes creation as well as how the show came to be. I wish all artbook were as rich in information as this one.

This was super helpful as far as trying to define my art style. I have a bunch of art saved that I enjoy, but I haven't looked beyond the initial "I like this" feeling. Super appreciate this video. Thank you!

Love that video, I always tell people that art style and the common opinion on it, that you don't have to focus on it is wrong. It shouldn't consume all your time put it should be a part of your art journey. Combining that with art books and the ideas of this video really opened my eyes👌🏾

I really truly appreciate your thoughts and how you share them. I’m so glad you kept in the moment of realization at the end. Perfectly human😁

U can use Tropy software for desktop, and tag spaces app to Organize Picture References on your phone and Cam scanner app to scan pics an u can create a catalog of your own work from your own Art Books. Hope this helps

Right now, the only art books I’m aiming to collect are books that will help strengthen my fundamentals, even when I’m not in an art related class. In other words, I’m building my own art curriculum. I recently bought a book on ink rendering to help me get back my momentum (and confidence) to expand my abilities with the pen. I also recently bought (as of now that I’m typing this) a book to help strengthen my lighting and coloring overall. Long story short, I was mostly self-taught with not a lot of guidance until I got to college, so for a while I was left to my own devices and kinda wandering aimlessly, which in turn gave me information overload, and mind you I have other endeavors beyond being an artist (also aspiring mangaka). So until I get more consistent training and coaching in this part of my life, like how I’m used to receiving as an athlete, I’m only going for books that not only inspire me, but teach me
