Both of you are right. Zod, in many ways, was a hero, but so was Jor-El, as he wanted freedom of choice to be the foundation for a new Krypton. The difference is that Jor-El knew how little time was left while all Zod was that the planet would die, but not how long. Both had Krypton's interest at heart.

Yes, most people do not know that in Superman-Kryptonian mythology that Zod and Jor-El were once very close. Zod helped defeat Black Zero, a maniacal terrorist group. That's why they talked like brothers, they were once very close before Krypton degenerated.
