It always amazes me how companies can build such grand structures and then cut corners when it comes to safety.

Calling something “unsinkable” is apparently a challenge Mother Nature takes personally.

This is why I could never work on an oil rig. Rogue waves, giant squid, crazy coworkers, Cthulhu...anything can happen.

My friends uncle died on the ranger. He was a welder and took the shift on his days off to cover another guy that needed time off. His name was Kenneth Chafe

I'm from Newfoundland and remember when this happened...watching the news and seeing the footage of the overturned lifeboats. The effects are still felt.

I know a man that was on the Ocean Ranger .. the night of the storm, back at home his daughter rolled off the changing table and broke her leg .... during the final shift change before the storm, his friend offered his spot on the helicopter so he could get home to see his daughter ... he took offer, and that night, the Ranger went down.

If this is a movie it wouldn't be believable.

Every step of the way I was waiting for somebody to live. I was actually getting my hopes up.

Basically the ranger sunk because some idiot engineer decided it was a good idea to put windows in an important room that could sink the platform.

It seems like a major oversight to putt a glass window in the rig's most important room. You'd think they'd make it as indestructible as possible.

I have been working on cruise ships for more than 10 years now, when a massive storm or typhoon is coming, captain of the ship would simply head the other way. We could choose where we wanna go and avoid the hazard. But Ranger is a rig and it cant go anywhere, massive respect for those whom works on rig, and RIP to those crews onboard Ranger.

As a newfoundlander myself I can say you pronounced it perfectly!!

I remember not sleeping that very night. Praying for my uncle to return. He was and still is with the Coast Guard.
The ocean ranger still haunts me to this Dat.

Thank 😊 you. I love the graphics. I'm a 66 year old Grandma and understood this disaster perfectly. Of course it was never in the news. I wish you'd do one on the consequent environmental effects? What happened to the oil? Did it leak into the Gulf? Do more videos, they àre interesting.

This was hands down a terrible tragedy. But just like any airplane crash this tragedy likely helped to bring about greater safety for all people who work an Oil Rig. Great video.
