This video explains the basics of free motion quilting. You need a sewing machine and the ability to drop the feed dogs on them and a free motion foot. Good things to have a free motion gloves and good quality thread.

I have really appreciated your quilting videos. They are clear and detailed, not so brief as to confuse :) Looking forward to one covering edging or binding the quilt :) Thank you!

I have been a quilter for most of my life but always hand quilted or sent them out. Recently I got a Viking 18" long arm table top machine! Wow, what fun but the learning curve is there for sure. I am loving your videos. Thanks

I’ve been watching your videos, very useful until now but today, you didn’t show the finished product how it came out front and back to have an idea. Thank you

That quilt hanging on your wall is one I'm currently doing. It's from Amy's 2012 block of the month. So much fun. I am enjoying watching your video and learning how to free motion quilt as a beginner. Looking forward to watching more!

ok so once you bring the threads up and are ready to stich... start stitching and then back stich one or two stitches... then you can continue with your free motion and trim those threads so they don't get stuck. Does that make sense? Hope that helps!

Hi Melanie, what a lovely video... Yes, I do get dis-heartened when things don't go the way I planned it - but you have made me feel better about that. Very encouraging words to a beginner - who Is not young! ... ;)

wow really looks so easy but hard at the same time... im going to try this and I think I may get hooked... quilts are forever.... dresses are grown out of... so I just move it? it seems tricky.

Thank you for all the learning tutorials, I am new to quilt making and you have helped me a lot. Thanks for telling us, don't stress & worry, I have felt defeated a few times with my first quilt. What causes the thread to bird nest underneath when using a darning foot to quilt? I know, you make this look easy, and practice will help, but I am all knotted up after sewing a little on my practice quilt and fear "what to do if it happens on my first quilt?". I did bring up the bobbin thread and trim the thread off at the beginning. Thanks, stay sweet.

I learn better by watching, so a class at a local quilt shop or Joanns etc would be a great way to learn more skills. Also, Craftsy dot com has awesome online sewing videos. Most you pay for, but the quilting Block of the Month is a free class that is really good.

Wow, this was great. I've always loved the whimsical qualities of a free motion quilt, but I've never seen how its done, so thanks for posting this. I had no idea that the free in "free motion" was so literal... as in, go anywhere, swerve over this way, and zing around that way, with a loop-dee-loop out yonder! How fun! You're a good teacher. Thanks for going over all the details. Now, I can go get me a new foot and some glovies. :)

loved your video. I too sometimes feel out of place being young and being all crafty with sewing and such but I love it! Your video was very helpful! I just bought my darning foot for my machine and going to try machine quilting for the first time. I got tired of paying someone else to do it for me. Thanks for the tips. I didn't know about the gloves before. So I'll have to break out a pair.

Hope you don't mind me mentioning, but if you can't drop your feed dogs down (as I can't with my Toyota Jeans RS2000) you can buy a darning plate. I got mine off ebay and it just clips on and pops off. Love your tutorials Melanie. I watch them a lot. This one is helping me get started on FMQ as I'm a total beginner. Thank you x

Great video! I've been trying to learn this for some time. Last night I started playing with my scraps and fmq. I'm almost done with a quilt and have reserved a strip down the center and I'd love to try. Would you consider doing a series on learning this? You are super easy to understand and ur explanations are wonderful and thorough. Tag me if you do! Thanks!!!
