If the Google assistant is not working on your phone then what you do, open Google Apps. Tap on this more option. Go to "Settings". Go to "Google assistant" and go to "Voice Match" at first and make sure that this option "Hey Google", it is enabled. So, once you enable this option then you can access your Google assistant when you say Hey Google even if the screen is off. Now gain go back. Go down and go to the option "General" and make sure that you have enabled this option "Google Assistant". If it is disabled, enable it. So, hopefully this should fix the issue.
