For those who dont understand

Missiles can be categorized into several types based on different criteria such as range, guidance, and platform. Below are the major categories and examples of missile types:

### 1. *By Launch Platform:*
- *Surface-to-Surface Missiles (SSM):* These missiles are launched from the ground or sea to strike targets on land or at sea. Examples include:
- *Scud Missiles:* Known for their use in the Middle East, these are liquid-fueled, short to medium-range missiles.
- *Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS):* A U.S. tactical missile for surface-to-surface applications.

- *Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM):* These are designed to target aircraft from the ground or sea.
- *Patriot Missile System:* A long-range SAM used for air defense against missiles, aircraft, and drones.
- *S-400 Triumf:* A Russian advanced air defense missile system designed to engage a variety of air threats.

- *Air-to-Air Missiles (AAM):* Missiles launched from aircraft to engage airborne targets.
- *AIM-120 AMRAAM:* A modern radar-guided missile for modern fighter jets.
- *R-77 (AA-12 Adder):* A Russian medium-range, active radar-guided missile.

- *Air-to-Surface Missiles (ASM):* These missiles are launched from aircraft to strike targets on the ground or at sea.
- *AGM-65 Maverick:* A U.S. guided missile for precision strikes against high-value targets.
- *Storm Shadow:* A long-range air-to-ground missile, often used for precision strikes.

- *Anti-Ship Missiles:* These are launched from the air, surface, or submarine to target ships.
- *Harpoon Missile:* A U.S.-made missile designed to destroy enemy ships.
- *Exocet Missile:* A French-designed anti-ship missile, known for its use in the Falklands War.

- *Submarine-Launched Missiles:* These missiles are launched from submarines, often designed for nuclear or conventional strikes.
- *Trident II D5:* A U.S. submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
- *R-29RMU Sineva:* A Russian SLBM with nuclear capabilities.

- *Anti-Tank Missiles (ATGM):* These missiles are used to destroy armored ground vehicles like tanks.
- *TOW Missile:* A widely used U.S. missile for targeting armored vehicles.
- *Javelin:* A man-portable, infrared-guided missile used to target tanks and other armored vehicles.

### 2. *By Guidance System:*
- *Radio Command Guidance:* The missile receives commands from a remote control station or platform.
- Example: *German V-2 Rocket* used radio guidance during WWII.

- *Infrared Guidance:* These missiles use infrared sensors to track heat signatures of targets.
- Example: *AIM-9 Sidewinder* is a heat-seeking air-to-air missile.

- *Laser Guidance:* A target is illuminated by a laser and the missile homes in on the reflection.
- Example: *Paveway* series (guided bombs) use laser-guidance.

- *Active Radar Guidance:* The missile carries its own radar to detect and track the target.
- Example: **AIM-120 AMRAAM**, which uses radar to track and lock onto targets.

- *Inertial Guidance:* The missile relies on internal accelerometers and gyroscopes to maintain its trajectory.
- Example: *Atlas missile* used an inertial guidance system during the early stages of missile technology development.

- *Global Positioning System (GPS):* The missile uses GPS coordinates to navigate towards its target with high precision.
- Example: *Tomahawk cruise missile* uses GPS guidance to reach distant targets.

- *Homemade or "Fire-and-Forget" Guidance:* These systems allow the missile to lock onto a target and track it without requiring further input from the operator.
- Example: *FIM-92 Stinger* is a man-portable, fire-and-forget, infrared-guided missile.

### 3. *By Range:*
- *Short-Range Missiles (SRBM):* Typically have a range of up to 1, 000 kilometers.
- Example: *Scud B* missile, which had a range of 300–600 kilometers.

- *Medium-Range Missiles (MRBM):* These have a range between 1, 000 km and 3, 000 km.
- Example: *DF-21* is a Chinese medium-range ballistic missile.

- *Intermediate-Range Missiles (IRBM):* Range between 3, 000 km and 5, 500 km.
- Example: *Pershing II* used by the U.S. in the Cold War, had a range of around 1, 500 km.

- *Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM):* Missiles with a range over 5, 500 kilometers, often designed to deliver nuclear payloads.
- Example: **Minuteman III**, a U.S. ICBM with multiple warheads.

- *Cruise Missiles:* These are guided missiles that fly at subsonic or supersonic speeds at low altitudes. Range can vary widely from a few hundred kilometers to over 2, 000 km.
- Example: *Tomahawk* cruise missile with a range of around 1, 600 km.

### 4. *By Function:*
- *Ballistic Missiles:* These missiles follow a ballistic trajectory, primarily used for nuclear, chemical, or conventional warheads.
- Example: **RS-24 Yars**, a Russian ICBM.

- *Cruise Missiles:* These are guided missiles that follow a low-level, constantly adjusting flight path to the target.
- Example: *AGM-86 ALCM* is a U.S. air-launched cruise missile.

- *Anti-Ballistic Missiles (ABM):* These are designed to intercept and destroy incoming ballistic missiles.
- Example: *THAAD* (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense), a U.S. missile defense system.

- *Tactical Missiles:* These are short-range missiles designed for battlefield use, often used in surface-to-surface or air-to-surface applications.
- Example: **Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS)**.

- *Strategic Missiles:* These long-range missiles are designed for strategic deterrence, typically carrying nuclear warheads.
- Example: **Trident II D5**.

- *Anti-Satellite Missiles (ASAT):* These missiles are designed to destroy satellites in space.
- Example: *Chinese ASAT missile* that destroyed a weather satellite in 2007.

### 5. *By Propulsion Type:*
- *Liquid-Fueled Missiles:* Use liquid propellants (fuel and oxidizer) and typically have a higher performance.
- Example: *Scud Missile* uses liquid propellants.

- *Solid-Fueled Missiles:* These are more reliable and easier to maintain, using solid fuel for propulsion.
- Example: **Minuteman ICBM**.

- *Ramjet and Scramjet Missiles:* These use air-breathing engines that compress incoming air to propel the missile at higher speeds (supersonic or hypersonic).
- Example: *BrahMos* is a supersonic cruise missile developed by India and Russia.

### 6. *By Payload:*
- *Nuclear Missiles:* These missiles are designed to carry nuclear warheads and have immense destructive power.
- Example: *R-36M* (Satan) is a Soviet-era ICBM with nuclear warheads.

- *Conventional Missiles:* These carry conventional (non-nuclear) warheads, typically used for precision strikes.
- Example: *Tomahawk* cruise missile with conventional payloads.

- *Chemical and Biological Missiles:* These missiles are designed to deliver chemical or biological agents.
- Example: *SCUD-B* used by Iraq, loaded with chemical warheads.

### 7. *Emerging Technologies:*
- *Hypersonic Missiles:* These missiles travel at speeds greater than Mach 5 and are more difficult to intercept.
- Example: *Zircon* missile, a hypersonic missile developed by Russia.

- *Directed Energy Weapons:* These are lasers or microwave-based weapons designed to neutralize incoming missiles.
- Example: *High Energy Laser Weapon System* (HELWS) for missile defense.

### Conclusion:
Missiles serve as versatile weapons in modern warfare, designed for various functions like strategic deterrence, tactical support, air defense, anti-ship operations, and much more. Technological advancements, especially in guidance systems and propulsion, continue to shape the development of new missile systems.
