I once was traveling to Cairo with my little Chihuahua in a tiny carrier. I must have looked sad, because when I checked in for my flight- the ticket agent processed my boarding and then about 20 mi utes before boarding the agent called me to the counter and upgraded me to first class!!!! I have never flown in first class! It was very nice to have my own bed for the long flight….

Free upgrades used to be a thing, many years ago. My BIL got one from Vancouver to Tokyo! Flying solo, he wore his suit and got upgraded to business class on a full flight.

By not asking. If it happens it's purely cause of circumstances. They like the way you look, they feel generous, empty seats they want filled, you offered to take a later or earlier flight, etc.

I love travelling with my instruments. Chances are my instrument's seat gets upgraded which in turn, upgraded my seat. So far, premium economy or extra leg room with leg rests are all I got but still appreciated.😂

Being nice, sick, or disabled works too. A nice disabled Dutch girl got upgraded on my KLM flight this month because the attendants felt like upgrading her. It was awesome, because she was sitting next to me and I ended up getting the entire row to myself.
