shot in the dark, but i'm guessing the brand of traditional hanafuda deck that you have is a "miyako no hana" made by none other than nintendo!

the western-style form hanafuda deck is from hanafuda hawaii style, and... i want one. it's a nice tool to ease players into playing the game played in hawaii called "sakura", but not on other games (koikoi, mushi, hachihachi, roppyakken, etc.)

also it's a bit of a pet peeve to me that the yaku in the game "sakura" don't have names, so i name them myself, based on yaku from other japanese hanafuda games. now i can easily remember them.

1. akatan (red ribbons) - the red ribbons with writing
2. aotan (blue ribbons) - the purple ribbons
3. kusatan (grass ribbons) - the plain red ribbons not including the willow ribbon
4. ura-akatan (reverse red) - the highest ranking (bright > animal > ribbon > junk) cards from the suits used in #1
5. ura-aotan (reverse blue) - the highest ranking cards from the suits used in #2
6. ura-kusatan (reverse grass) - the highest ranking cards from the suits used in #3
7. ganbo (eating) - boar, deer, geese. they can be considered farm pests; also, their meats can be eaten by people.
8. nomi (drinking) - sake cup, full moon, curtain. a combination of the hanami de ippai (flower-viewing) and tsukimi de ippai (moon-viewing) yaku. as Solo McLaughlin would put it, "drinking sake under the full moon while smelling the flowers".
