How to speak PIDGIN English - Authentic Hawaiian slang

Iss Aloha Friday an today we stay talkin olelo paiai aka Hawaiian Pidgin English! Das rite Hawaiian Pidgin aka Pidgin English is apparently one different language dan regulah English. But not jus dat, Pidgin was officially recognized by da "US Census bureau" as one language.

So da point, cuz if you speak English and Hawaiian Pidgin den gess wat!? You stay bi-lingual. An if u talk English, Hawaiian Pidgin AND Olelo Hawaii den you stay tri-lingual!!! Dat mean you one smaht buggah.

Pidgin in Hawaii formed when all of the immigrants came to work in the sugar plantation and pineapple plantation in the late 1800’ and early 1900’s. The Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans and the Hawaiians could only speak broken English. They all worked together and could only communicate with broken English. It’s not just a mixture of just Hawaiian and English, it’s a mixture of all that I mentioned.

Pidgin is such a fun language and so nostalgic to my childhood. It was frowned upon while growing up before it became an official language.

It is remarkable how creole/pidgin has such similar flow and cadence regardless of the region they come from. Caribbean, Hawaii, Nigeria... hell even fictional Creole/Patois from the TV Series "The Expanse" Lang Belta all sound so similar, yet are unique enough to stand on their own. They are beautiful languages and something that should not be forgotten.

We came to the mainland when I was 5. I spoke Pidgin, a little Hawaiian, a little Mandarin, and a little Japanese. But didn’t know I didn’t speak English exactly. I had to take ESL classes and speech before I could enter mainstream Kindergarten. I don’t remember Pidgin at all. I can recognize a little Japanese but Mandarin is what I seem to recall the most. Likely because my best friend in Hawaii was Chinese.

some similarties with Nigerian pidgin, but we say, "make we go chop(eat)", or "make we go drink". Sometimes they could say "make we waka go chop"

I was trying to explain pidgin to my daughter... I put pidgin news on and we listened and I saw her getting it - not sure how someone couldn't at least get the basic message. But you... I smiled at her and said its like verbal slang-cursive. Then I said baddayou donledit. Lol!!

I grew up with my mom speaking Pidgin, but neva really picked it up cuz I went to an all English school. Now I am trying to learn more about my culture and the language. Mahalo for taking the time to teach.

Shakka! Learned Pidgin when I worked at Dillingham Shipyards in the 1970's. Still can speak Pidgin when visit Hawaii, and love talking with locals this way. Your Hawaiian language is beautiful and wish I could learn that too.

I grew up in Hawaii(one local haole) and always got put down for speaking da kine. 😥 Now I realize it's a beautiful and deep language that has been stigmatized. Now in my forties living on the mainland I am getting my Pidgin back. It's the language of my heart. It's not broken English or inferior. It is unique and amazing!
