Thanks to all my Patrons for helping to make these videos possible!

Although it is likely that Bartók did not intend his 44 duos to be performed in the concert hall – but rather that they were used by students of various levels – these are such superb works that they have become hugely popular for violinists and audiences alike.

All the songs and dances in this series are based on folk music from various Eastern European countries, with added harmonic and rhythmic invention from the composer. They were commissioned by German violinist and teacher Erich Doflein and are arranged in ascending order of difficulty. Dissonant harmonies are present throughout the duos, but Bartók also introduces polytonality, polyrhythms and many other compositional devices to add variety within the set.
