Andy Hug The Blue Eyed Samurai Andreas (7 September 1964 – 24 August 2000) was a Swiss karateka and kickboxer who competed in the heavyweight division. Considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight kickboxers of all time, Hug was renowned for his ability to execute numerous kicking techniques rarely seen in high-level competition and although he was usually smaller than his opponents, standing at 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) and being barely a heavyweight, weighing around 98.0 kg (216.1 lb; 15.43 st) in his prime, he made up for his lack of size with his tremendous athleticism and speed. A southpaw, his trademark kicks included the axe kick and the "Hug Tornado", a low spinning heel kick targeting his opponents' thighs

He was sometimes around in my Dojo in Zürich, Switzerland, although he did the main training in Aargau. He was a friend of Kaufmann, the founder of Swiss Budoka Karate Schools. But as i saw him, it was before he got popular, it was in the old days that you see with the Karate scenes instead of K9. A humble man, never arrogant, never a bad guy in any way. I never fought him, but i saw what he was capable of even before he made his breakthrough. He joked around, he trained and played around with the kids back in the old days in Wädenswil ZH. That was never serious, but we all knew, if you'd meet him in a tournament and he'd go full power, he was a machine and would have cut you down with a single kick or punch.

He was the idol of all us back in this time, we admired him and his skills. We were shocked, as he passed away in 2000, it was a real bad time.

Very talented, and so humble, always respectful of his opponents, true to Kyokushin teachings. Osu! R.I.P. Andy.

He was my absolute idol growing up in Switzerland. I still know where I was and what I did when I got the call that he had died. It still makes me sad to this day.

A fighter often envied, often imitated, but never equaled, it is difficult to have such class in combat, forever in our hearts.

Fun fact, low spinning heel kicks are rarely used because it leaves you open for hooks and streight punches. But Hug times it perfectly to counter kicks, and eevn sets up high kick so that the opponent will be too bussy protecting his face to guard his knees.

RIP to all those who say Traditional Karate techniques are useless in Mixed Martial arts.
Just look at this legend Andy....if u have such solid base in any traditional form..u can win the world!
Even in modern forms of UFC he would be a Heavyweight champion just because of his brilliance to think and execute so many variations while fighting.

Andy was fantastic! Rest in peace. I hope his son and his wife are still ok. Nearly 22 years since he flew by us. A big loss of a great legend. He passed away at the age of 36. Possible something wrong was administered in his medication otherwise it does not make any sense. An athlete must be a healthy person! He can't die in such a manner. Respect for all your carrier Andreas Hug! ❤️

The guy's a natural born athlete with perfect commitment to his craft - a lethal combination. Good work youtube algorithm for helping me find Andy Hug. I'm inspired :D
