Hearts Of Palm: Swamp Cabbage Stew

Before there was "Hearts of Palm" there was "Swamp Cabbage". It's the heart of a sable palm tree and when properly cooked, is absolutely amazing to eat! Growing wild all over south florida, this wild treat was a main staple of the early floridians, often referred to as "Crackers".

I'm a native Floridian (Miami, Homestead) living in the Midwest. I grew up boar hunting, snorkeling for lobster off the Keys, and 'gator hunting with my dad until he passed away. Whenever I want to show my Midwest friends about outdoor life in Florida, I refer them to your videos! Enough said!

60 years ago when I was growing up swamp cabbage squirrel and dumplings was my favorite meal. Usually cooked over a camp fire on a deer hunt

We eat a lot of palm cabbage or we called it here - heart of palm in Sarawak, Malaysia. Great with chicken also. Me and my grandad use to survive eating it raw while in the jungle. Sweet and crunchy! nyummm!

Here in Hawai'i I grew up eating the hearts of young coconut palms. We'd usually eat them raw in a salad. You can keep them in a brine in the frige for several days the brine keeps them from turning brown. You can also pickle them. First time I've seen them being cooked. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know when I have enjoyed a "cooking show" as much as this. This reminds me of the good folks down Arcadia, Alva, and Labelle way. To my knowledge, I've never had swamp cabbage (although I remember when I was a small boy in Tennessee, someone apparently brought some by, because I remember using the layers/sheaths as "armor" of some sort. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! I'd PAY to have a meal of that!

The outer bark makes a great tinder for fire starting and the layers around the trees make great shingles for a wilderness shelter if you are stuck somewhere

Thank you for your video and putting it on YouTube. I’ve heard of hearts of palm but I have no idea as to which palm, how it was harvested, what to look for in harvesting one and then it looks like a delicious stew to bring forward this video with the recipe. It looks absolutely delicious and I can tell by everyone’s facial expressions as well as the many noises that were made lol that it was outstanding. Again thank you for the video I enjoyed it immensely
