14 The French colonization of Algeria

Did you ever wonder why there is a line in the Marine Corps anthem about marching "to the shores of Tripoli"? It has something to do with a war that the US fought against... North African pirates. Algeria later became a colony of France, which raised some interesting philosophical issues: how could a democracy like France govern a colony without betraying the egalitarian principles of the Enlightenment? This and much more as we study the history of the French colonization of Algeria in the 19th c.
