My 28mm Canon lens had some focusing issues and the focusing ring didn't turn the focus at all, so I decided to take it apart to see if I can fix it.

1:27 Pull the white plastic part towards you to release that flex connector. There are two recesses in the top so you can drop the tips of curved, pointed tweezers in there and pull both sides evenly, though you can work it free without them.
2:10 There is a 3rd flat flex we can't see that he's removing. You'll need some flat tipped tweezers that can grip the flat flex without damaging it to put that one back on without damaging it.
3:32 this is as far as you need to go in order to replace a focus ring with a rubber coating that's turned to sticky goo.

Fyi, you can order parts for the lens from Canon parts. I bought a new focus ring for mine. p/n YA2-2235
For those with broken spacers, it looks like there are two different ones. YA2-2703 and YA2-2238 (3 of them, that come in 3 thicknesses - you may need a very accurate way to measure or buy 3 of each?)

Search for the lens name and exploded view or parts list and you may find the PDF from canon with the part numbers.

Thanks so much for this video! It gave me the confidence to take my lens apart to fix the same problem you had. I WAS able to fix my lens by adding a drop of super glue to the ring under the focus ring grip. The assembly that you remove at 3:55 has those parts together. Just add a drop of superglue to the two black rings just below the metal free-spinning ring, so that the two (not all three) rings spin together. It will make it so that your focus grip will only spin as far as the focus.

It actually didn't end up fixing the issue as mine was caused of dropping the lens so there is still something misaligned that I couldn't see when I opened it up. So I closed it back up and it worked as well as it did before. its actually not the sand I would be worried about, its the electronics board in your case and the motors.

Those little white spacers that fall out at 4:00. They've snapped on mine and yours. I have this problem and the lens elements move. Trying to superglue them together atm and it no longer wobbles after placing only one fixed spacer.

My 28 1.8 lens is giving an error while I try to shoot pointing downwards. It kind of lose contact in the middle of the shot. sometimes the blades get stuck closed after the error and returning normal after camera restart. What could be the issue?

ive been waiting for a video to show me how to take apart the 28mm. I left it on the beach and the tide came in. I have sand all in the ring and who knows what else. I think im going to open it up.

Did you end up fixing your issues?

God forbid..do NOT break the small AF/MF switch when disassembling or reassembling. You will walk through hell. Luckily I was able to find another switch "somewhat" like it from a donor lens and soldered it on and it works like a charm.

If that doesn't make any sense, I can make a video showing you how to do it. Thanks again!
