With regards to American Airlines. If one is unable to get their carry-on bag/duffel in the over head compartment. As long as the bag can fit underneath the seat in front of you. One will be fine. I have a UA bag which looks very comparable to the Panga 50 with regards to the size, & I was able to get my bag underneath the seat in front of me with no problem. With that being stated, I'm seriously thinking about getting the Panga 50. I'm not a fan of checking my luggage. Also too mention, the Panga 50 looks extremely durable & I believe it will be a awesome carry on travel duffel.
