On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic left port in Southampton and set sail on its maiden voyage to New York City. The ship was the largest of its time and was considered to be the height of luxury, featuring state of the art equipment and incredible accommodations that included a saltwater swimming pool and a Versailles-style lounge.
In spite of its many amenities, the Titanic very famously was outfitted with fewer lifeboats than would be required for its 2200 passengers. When the ship struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, only 705 people managed to escape with their lives. Here’s how many dead bodies have been recovered from the Titanic.

The last survivor Millvina Dean, who was just two months old at the time of the tragedy, died in 2009 at the age of 97.

My great grandmother Ada Ball survived the Titanic sinking. She was 37 at the time but her brother in law, My great uncle once removed, have his seat up to her on life boat 10 and did not make it.

James Cameron's movie was hardly the film that inspired interest in the disaster, there were many 'Titanic' films long before it. The one that caught my attention long ago was 'A night to remember'. Still, I never knew just how many people actually went down with the ship, as opposed to the number of bodies recovered. A terrible loss never the less, RIP.

There was no panic as the first boats were launched. They were launched nearly empty, as people felt safer on the, "unsinkable", ship. And some crewmembers were unsure of the capacity of the lifeboats.

Just a slight correction here: The "water-tight" compartments weren't water tight at all. They were partitions that were open at the top allowing water to flow into the next partition and then on down the line. If they were truly water tight the ship might have had a chance or at least stayed afloat long enough to have received assistance from the steam ship Carpathia. Only God knows for sure though.

If they had filled all the lifeboats to capacity, another 700 lives would have been saved. Since Captain Smith the lifeboat drill that was scheduled the moring of Sunday, April 14, the officers didn't get the training to lower the lifeboats resulting in chaos that night

I’ve walked through that cemetery and past those graves many times when I lived in North Halifax

The graveyard shown in the photos is just down the road from our Convent

I’ve always thought it sad that they didn’t bury the victims somewhere in the US since that was their destination.

Visited the main Titanic gravesites in the Halifax graveyard a few years ago. The gravestones are arranged in a gentle curvature resembling a ships hull from bow to stern. It was a very powerful experience. There is a grave marked Jack Dawson but it has nothing to do with the Jack Dawson in the movie other than Cameron borrowing the name for the character in the movie as it sounds Anglo American.

323 bodies were recovered from the Titanic including richest passenger John Jacob Astor identified by his gold cuff links with the initials JJA and several hundred dollars in notes in his pocket. Isidor and Ida Strauss, owners of Macys both died because Ida would not be separated from her husband who was allowed to board a lifeboat but refused. Ida's body was found but Isidor was lost.

The Titanic gained a cult following long before the movie

The water was able to flow over the barriers in the compartments so there was really 0 flood proof compartents. Hardly unsinkable since budget undercut safety, the fancy furnishings were more important to them.

In 1993 I was at a local book sale in my hometown. I bought a used paperback copy of Walter Lord's A Night To Remember. For some reason for which I cannot explain.... for some people once the subject of the Titanic gets in to your system...there is no escaping it...EVER!

Many thanks for the mention of Project Name Them All.

IIRC, several weeks after the loss, a ship came across a group of bodies in life jackets, all linked together. They were all just skeletons at that point, and the ship was outbound with a long way to go, so the poor souls were left to the sea.

Titanic had lots of really solid movies made before James Cameron

I don't think I've ever seen the narrator. o.O

I thought this was going to include the bodies that are still trapped inside the Titanic. Yes, bodies could still remain there. The wreck of the CSS Hunley (first submarine) sank in the Atlantic in 1864, was recovered in 2000 with bodies still on board.
